Hearing/Vision/Height/Weight Screening

Hearing/Vision/Height/Weight Screening

Hearing and Vision Screening are requirements of the State of Alaska. There will be scheduling of these screenings in the future. Public Health Nursing takes care of this when they travel to the village schools.

Hearing and vision screening in schools is mandated by Alaska Statute Sec. 14.30.127. The statute reads: A vision and hearing screening examination shall be given to each child attending school in the state. The examination shall be made when the child enters school or as soon thereafter as is practicable, and at regular intervals specified by regulation by the governing body of the district. The program of hearing screening is under the general supervision of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS). Access to the full statute is found at http://www.legis.state.ak.us/basis/folio.asp.

Height and Weight Screening

Although assessment of height and weight are not specifically required by Alaska Statute, assessment of height and weight using Body Mass Index is an important clinical tool in assessing the health and growth of a child. Our school/district has been assessing heights and weights of students each school year.
